April Birthday Luncheon to be held


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will celebrate participant’s April birthdays Friday, April 11 at 12:00 noon with a pot-luck luncheon. You are welcome to bring a food dish to share or pay $3 per person and join the fellowshipping and enjoy the delicious food. Time is drawing near for the end to the free income tax assistance being offered at the Center by AARP trained preparers. This will continue every Monday through Thursday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., only until April 15. It is a first come first serve basis. Sign in when you arrive. Bring your last year’s tax return if possible and all other necessary information and identification. The Center also offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up an April calendar of events when you stop by. Hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends.

        Monday, April 7 –The women pool players start the week off with some fun competition at the pool tables. They get in several rounds of 8-ball every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings starting at 9:30 a.m. Bring your pool stick or use one from the Center and join the fun! An art class also comes in during the same time. They bring their own supplies and help each other with suggestive ideas as needed. The income tax preparers also arrive by then ready to help until 12:00 noon. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. The afternoon brings out bridge and canasta players, and pool shooters.

        Tuesday, April 8 – If your muscles are in need of some good stretching and limbering up, why not try out the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise program offered at the Center every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. It offers a low impact, 45 minute workout that helps strengthen and tone up your muscles. Some exercises are done while sitting and others are done while standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands, and bouncing balls. Afterwards, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing. This will get you a really good workout!  Tax assistance continues during the morning. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, pool/snooker and jig-saw puzzle solving. 

         Wednesday, April 9 – Pool balls are racked up again by the women pool players beginning at 9:30 a.m.  Also, Wii bowling is played on Wednesday morning at the same opening time. They have a really good time. Come check it out! The tax preparers are busily working up tax returns. Then, in the afternoon games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, pool and snooker are played along with an afternoon movie, at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is a highly acclaimed movie about the author of “Mary Poppins” titled, “Saving Mr. Banks.” A 1:00 p.m. men’s pool tournament will be held at the Center and you are welcome to join the friendly competition.

         Thursday, April 10 – The weather is finally getting warmer and it is time to get in shape. Check out the free exercise class called Sit ‘n Be Fit offered at the Center at 9:30 a.m. It will give you a good workout and stretching of those muscles. AARP income tax help is still available, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool or snooker. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun!

         Friday, April 11 – Popular Friday morning activities are women’s pool playing and painting in the art class. These begin at 9:30 a.m.  Exercise equipment is also available for use. Remember the birthday pot-luck luncheon begins at 12:00 noon. Afternoon lunch games begin and consist of; canasta, Texas Hold’em, and pool or snooker.

         Game champions announced for the past week were: for social bridge; Lynn Fent, 1st, and Norma Burk, 2nd. Duplicate bridge winners: Lionel Raff and Al Perry; Camille Johnston and Terry Miller all tied for first and second place. A men’s 8-ball pool tournament was held and the champion was Fred Seamans. The popular Wii bowling also had a champion, which was Dennis Morrow.

Defensive Driving Class to be held


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will offer a free defensive driving class on Monday, March 24 from 9:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. An instructor from Meridian Technical Center will teach the class. Everyone will receive a certificate after class that can be taken to your vehicle insurance provider to see if you qualify for a discount.  Also, another free service offered is the income tax assistance provided by AARP trained preparers. This will continue every Monday through Thursday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., until April 15. It is a first come first serve basis. Sign in when you arrive. Bring your last year’s tax return if possible and all other necessary information and identification. A presentation, “Navigating the Senior Network”, will take place on Wednesday, March 26 at 2:00 p.m. at the Center. Representatives from different senior service providers will be present for discussions and Q&A’s. They want to help find solutions that can improve your quality of life. Duplicate bridge winners: Charles Foreman and Jane Anderson, 1st; and Penny Sizemore and Lucy Robinson, 2nd. Texas Hold’em players were back at their game and winners during the week were: Chestine Crane and Lula Mae Davis. A men’s pool tournament was also held and the winner was Vic Berryman.

Book Review at the Senior Center


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold a book review for the, One Book One Community, book read. This will be presented by, Pat Jaynes on Thursday, February 27 at 10:30 a.m. The book is titled, “Fahrenheit 451 by author Ray Bradbury. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Center also offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. You can participate in: card games, exercise class, art class, pool and snooker, bingo, line dancing, Wii games, exercise equipment, movies, and a music night. Also, the Center will be hosting free income tax assistance by AARP trained tax preparers every Monday through Thursday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., February 3 until April 15.
