Income Tax Assistance at the Senior Center


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will be hosting AARP trained income tax preparers starting Monday, February 3. They will be offering free tax assistance every Monday through Thursday mornings until April 15. Their hours are 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon and no appointments are necessary. Bring your last year’s tax return if possible and all other necessary information and identification. The Center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. You can participate in: card games, exercise class, art class, pool and snooker, bingo, line dancing, Wii games, exercise equipment, movies, and a music night. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up a calendar of events when you stop by. Hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Also, please remember with the weather changes coming, if the Stillwater Public Schools are closed the Senior Activity Center will also be closed.

        Monday, Feb. 3 – Income tax help starts this morning at 9:30 a.m. through 12:00 noon. Also, going on during the morning is, women pool playing time and a painting class. The pool players get exercise walking around the tables and stretching for just the right shot. The artists like to get together and share their skills and enjoy the social time spent with each other. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. The afternoon brings out bridge and canasta players, and pool shooters.

        Tuesday, Feb. 4 – A free exercise class called, Sit ‘n Be Fit starts at 9:30 a.m. The class offers a low impact, 45 minute workout that helps strengthen your muscles. Some are done while sitting and others are done while standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands, and bouncing balls. Afterwards, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing. This will get you a really good workout!  Tax assistance continues during the morning. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, pool/snooker and jig-saw puzzle solving. 

         Wednesday, Feb. 5 – The women get out their pool sticks again after the doors open at 9:30 a.m. Also, Wii games are played on Wednesday morning at the same opening time. The tax preparers are busily working up tax returns. Then, in the afternoon games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, pool and snooker are played along with an afternoon movie, at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is a drama based on historic events. The film is, “The Butler”. 

         Thursday, Feb 6 – AARP income tax help is still available, 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Get in shape by joining the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class, offered at 9:30 a.m. The class will provide a good stretching and toning for your body. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool or snooker. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun!

         Friday, Feb. 7 – Pool playing skills are practiced again by the women starting at 9:30 a.m.  The painters will be at it again, also. Bring your painting supplies and get creative. Exercise equipment is also available for use. Games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, and pool/snooker begin in the afternoon.

          Duplicate bridge winners for last week were: Meg Kletke and Carolyn Schwabe, 1st, and Norma Burk and Treca Baer, 2nd. Social bridge and Texas Hold’em were not played.

Also, a group of artists get together during the morning and enjoy sharing their creative ideas with each other. A men’s pool tournament will held at 1:00 p.m. Senior men, come join the competitive fun!

          Winners for last week games were: for social bridge: Cindy Smith, 1st, and Norma Burk, 2nd; duplicate bridge; Murna Raff and Seham El Sherif, 1st, and Terry Miller and Camille Johnston, 2nd. The Texas Hold’em champions for the week were;  Darrell Davis and Chestine Crane.

         Thursday, Jan. 23 – A free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class is offered at 9:30 a.m. This class will give you a good toning workout for your muscles. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool or snooker. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun!

         Friday, Jan. 24 – The women pool players are back again for some more fun beginning at 9:30 a.m. Also, a painting group comes in during that same time. They get creative with their paints and canvases. If you would like to join them, bring your art supplies and artistic ideas. Exercise equipment is also available for use. Games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, and pool/snooker begin in the afternoon. 

          Winners for last week games were: for social bridge: Norma Burk, 1st, and Penny Sizemore, 2nd; duplicate bridge; Al Perry and Lionel Raff, 1st, and Terry Miller and Camille Johnston, 2nd. A men’s pool tournament was held and the champion was Wayne Vinson. The Texas Hold’em winner for the week was Darrell Davis.

They bring in their own supplies and help each other with ideas and questions they might have about their artwork. Other crafters are welcome to bring their projects and join the group, also. The Center has an exercise room with exercise bikes and a weight set for senior use. The afternoon crowd arrives around 12:30 p.m. to play games of bridge, canasta, dominoes, pool/snooker, and jig-saw puzzle solving.

Then, in the afternoon games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, pool and snooker are played along with an afternoon movie, at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is a drama based on a true event entitled:  “Parkland”.  Join the pool players in a coed pool tournament at 1:00 p.m.

         Friday, Jan. 17 – As soon as the doors open at 9:30 a.m., women pool players and the painting group will arrive, anxious to get started at the pool tables and at their canvases. Exercise equipment is also available for use. Games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, and pool/snooker begin in the afternoon.  

          Due to the past holidays, there are no winners to report. The bridge groups and Texas Hold’em players did not meet.

The New Year is Underway!


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center participants are ready to start a new year by enjoying many activities such as; card games, exercise class, art class, pool and snooker, bingo, line dancing, Wii games, exercise equipment, movies, and a music night. Also, on Friday, January 10 at 12:00 noon the January birthday pot-luck luncheon will be held. You can bring a food dish to share or pay $3/person. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun.          Friday, Jan. 10 – The Center opens at 9:30 a.m. and the women pool players are waiting at the door ready to practice their pool shots. The painting group is also there with their paints, brushes and canvases, eager to get creative and exchange ideas. Exercise equipment is also available for use. The birthday pot-luck luncheon will begin at 12:00 noon. Games of canasta, Texas Hold’em, and pool/snooker begin in the afternoon.  

          Champions for various games held last week were: social bridge winners; Cloyann Fent, Anna Cooper, and Wally Reynolds all tied for 1st place. Duplicate bridge partners did not meet this week. Texas Hold’em champion for the week was: Darrell Davis.  Also a men’s 9-ball pool tournament was held and the winner was Dwight Wilkins.
