Senior Center Closed for the Fourth of July

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will be closed Friday, July 4 for the holiday. The Center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up a July calendar of events when you stop by. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Music night on Thursdays is a good evening outing to check out. Musicians entertain with rock’in country and gossip music. It is not too late to get in the water aerobics class that meets every Tuesday and Thursday at the City Municipal Pool from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. This class will run through July 31 and only cost $2 each time you attend. Payment is made at the pool. Also, the Walk in the Park program has been popular. You can still participate. After ten walks in Couch Park you earn a free t-shirt. So sign up today.

         Take note, coming on Wednesday, July 9 a defensive driving class will be offered at the Senior Center from 9:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A lunch break will be taken from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. The class is provided by Meridian Technology Center. The sign-up sheet is out now so drop by the Center or call at 405-747-8080 to get your name down. Space is limited. Check with your vehicle insurer to see if this class will qualify you for a discount on your insurance. A certificate of completion will be given at the end of the class.


Several senior participants of the Stillwater Senior Activity Center took part in the opening day of the Walk in the Park event held in Couch Park. They are working towards receiving a free t-shirt and better health. 

        Monday, June 30 – Several activities start the week off at 9:30 a.m. If you need a good exercise workout, you can’t beat the price for the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class. A few exercises are done while sitting and some while standing by a chair. It is a good workout that utilizes stretchy bands, bouncing balls, and hand weights. Women pool players get in several rounds of friendly competitive games of 8-ball, also. Bring your pool stick or use one from the Center and test your skills. A painting/crafting class also meets. It is a social time to get together and get creative at a canvas or any other craft you want to bring in to work on while sharing ideas. Also, at 10:30 a.m. a group of line dancers practice some boot scoot’in moves. Check it out and get a powerful workout while having a blast! Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. Bridge and canasta are popular card games played along with pool/snooker and puzzle solving.

        Tuesday, July 1 – The Center’s Wii game system comes out Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Wii bowling is a popular game of the seniors. Each player is in control of his own game by holding the hand controller and trying to make strikes just like at a real bowling alley. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. Water aerobics meets at the Stillwater Municipal pool at 12:30 p.m. It is great exercise, and only $2/session. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, and jig-saw puzzle solving. A coed pool tournament will be held at 1:00 p.m.  Senior pool players are welcome to join the competitive fun. Bingo players also meet up on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. It is a lot of laughs and everyone gets a prize!

         Wednesday, July 2 – Get in shape with the free exercise class or practice your pool shots with the women pool players during the morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. Afterwards, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing at 10:30 a.m. Then, in the afternoon games of canasta, pool and snooker are played along with an afternoon movie, at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is a drama, titled, “The Straight Story.”

         Thursday, July 3 – Try your hand out at Wii bowling Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. and don’t forget at 12:30 p.m. water aerobics meets up at the City pool. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, dominoes, pool and snooker. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun. During the evening, starting at 6:00 p.m., musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tappin country music.  Come enjoy the music!

         Friday, July 4 – The Center is closed for the holiday.


         Game champions announced for last week were: social bridge winners; Dollie McClary, 1st and Lynn Fent, 2nd. Duplicate bridge winners were; Al Perry and Lionel Raff, 1st and Charles Foreman, Jane Anderson, Camille Johnston, and Terry Miller; all tied for 2nd place. Wii bowling champions for the week were: Jean Hatcher, 1st, and Lee Arnswald, 2nd. Also, the winner of the pool tournament was Vic Berryman.

Blood Pressure Checks at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will offer free blood pressure checks on Monday, June 23 at 1:00 p.m. These are provided by May’s Home Call Home Health. Also, Lois Jackson, a certified massage therapist, will be giving free hand and foot massages to the senior participants on Monday, June 23 at 10:30 a.m.  No appointments are needed for either one of the events. The massage therapist, Lois Jackson, will also be at the Center at 10:30 a.m. to offer some relaxing hand or foot massages and maybe a neck massage. This is a first come first serve basis. Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. Bridge and canasta are popular card games played along with pool/snooker and puzzle solving. The free blood pressure checks will start at 1:00.

         Friday, June 27 – End of the week, but still a lot of fun activities left to do. Like, women’s pool, exercise class, and a painting/crafting class all meeting up at 9:30 a.m. If you would like some more exercise, stay after the exercise class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. Exercise equipment is also available for use. Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. and consist of; canasta, and pool or snooker.

Spend Hot Summer Days at the Senior Activity Center

The Walk in the Park event got off to a good start and will continue all summer. Senior participants can come to the Center and check out how they can earn a free t-shirt by walking in Couch Park and get signed up now! You can still check out the water aerobics class that meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Stillwater Municipal Pool in Couch Park. Each session is $2 and is paid at the pool. Swimsuits are required, no shorts/shirts allowed. Another day of bingo has also been added to the calendar. It will now be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. Center hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. Water aerobics meets at the Stillwater Municipal pool at 12:30 p.m. It is great exercise, and only $2/session. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pool/snooker and jig-saw puzzle solving. Bingo will now be played on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. in addition to the regular Thursday time. Everyone gets a prize!

The class can help you test your endurance and strengthen your muscles and give you a good workout. If you would like some more exercise, stay after class and join the line dancing group that meets at 10:30 a.m. They really get to moving and can work up a sweat while having fun. Other popular Friday morning activities are women’s pool playing and painting/crafts in the art class. These begin at 9:30 a.m.  Exercise equipment is also available for use. June birthdays will be celebrated with a pot-luck luncheon starting at 12:00 noon. Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. and consist of; canasta, and pool or snooker.
