October Birthday Luncheon to be held at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will host the October birthday, pot-luck luncheon on Friday, October 10 at 12:00 noon. You can bring a food dish to compliment Frito-chili pie or pay $3/person and enjoy the friendly fellowshipping. Also, during the busy week, free guitar lessons will begin on Tuesday, October 7 at 9:30 a.m. Just bring your own guitar and let Jim Thomas help you get better at playing. Remember to Zumba with Angie at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. This is an aerobic fitness program done to high tempo dance music. After all the exercise you can get your blood pressure checked at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday by Home Call Home Health.  There is no charge and no sign up for this service. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up an October calendar of events when you stop by. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends.

        Monday, Oct. 6 – Time to talk yourself into exercising by joining the free exercise class, Sit ‘n Be Fit, offered at the Senior Center every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. This class incorporates a chair for some sitting, stretching exercises along; with some standing, limbering up exercises, also. Stretching bands, rubber bouncing balls, sponge balls, and wooden dowel sticks are all used for various exercises that help with your coordination and flexibility. Women’s 8-ball pool time and a painting/crafting class also take place at the same time. The women pool players play several friendly, competitive rounds of 8-ball and would love for more players to come and join them. Also, the painting/crafting class would like for more members to join their group. You can bring your art supplies or a craft project and socialize while sharing your artistic skills. At 10:30 a.m. seniors can come try their footwork out to some country music during the line dancing class. Beginners to more advance dancers are all welcome. They have a good and invigorating time. Later, during the afternoon games of bridge, canasta, pool/snooker, and jig saw puzzle solving are popular.

        Tuesday, Oct. 7 – Tuesday morning has become a busy time. Starting at 9:30 a.m. you can act like you are at a bowling alley by playing some Wii bowling. This is played on a game system where each player is in control of his own game by holding the hand controller and trying to make strikes just like at a real bowling alley. Also, at 9:30 a.m. a new session of free guitar lessons will begin. The instructor, Jim Thomas will give his time to help people learn the guitar or brush up on their playing skills. Zumba class participants start moving to the dance music at 10:30 a.m. to get some exercise. Afternoon games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, and jig-saw puzzle solving. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. Free blood pressure checks will be taken at 1:00 p.m. Bingo is played at 2:00 p.m. It is a lot of laughs and everyone gets a prize!

         Wednesday, Oct. 8 – Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class starts at 9:30 a.m., or you can get some exercise by walking around the pool tables during women’s pool time. Then at 10:30 a.m. line dancers really get their exercise by kicking up their heels to some swinging country tunes. In the afternoon games of canasta and other cards games are played. Also, at 1:00 p.m. a coed pool tournament will take place. Senior men and women pool players are welcome to participate. Bring your own pool stick or use one from the Center and join the fun competition. An afternoon movie is shown at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is a comedy, titled, “Mom’s Night Out.”

         Thursday, Oct. 9 – Another fun time with Wii bowling begins at 9:30 a.m. Zumba with Angie, begins at 10:30 a.m. During the afternoon, try a game of canasta, or some pool/snooker playing. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tappin country music, that starts at 6:00 p.m. Come enjoy the music!

        Friday, Oct. 10 – Friday mornings start off with the Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class, women’s 8-ball pool, and a painting/crafting class, all beginning at 9:30 a.m. And at 10:30 a.m. line dancing class members move to the music. Preparations will be going on for the 12:00 noon, birthday pot-luck luncheon. After lunch cards are brought out for afternoon games of canasta, and pool balls for rounds of pool/snooker.

  
       Game champions announced for last week were: social bridge; Cloyann Fent, 1st, and Janetta Loper, 2nd; duplicate bridge winners were; Lionel Raff and Al Perry, 1st; and Meg Kletke and Adrienne Hyle; 2nd. Winner of the pool tournament last week was Frank Berry. Wii bowling champion for the week was Lynn Duncan.

Senior Volunteer Meeting at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold a meeting, Wednesday, September 24 at 10:30 a.m. for all the current volunteers and anyone that is interested in becoming a volunteer for the Center during the morning hours. Volunteers must be a senior citizen, 50 years old or older, fill out a form, and receive some training from the Center’s staff. You can then sign up for two different shifts, 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. or 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon; Monday through Friday mornings. Duties include; light kitchen duties, making popcorn/tea/coffee, putting out snacks, answering the phones, and greeting visitors. If interested you can attend the meeting, phone or come by the Center for more information. Remember to Zumba with Angie on Thursday, September 25 at 10:30 a.m. All seniors 50 and over are welcome to participate, free of charge. An afternoon movie is shown at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is an older drama with good music, titled, “Walk the Line.”

         Thursday, Sept. 25 – A fun time with Wii bowling begins at 9:30 a.m. The new class called Zumba by Angie, begins at 10:30 a.m. This is a fun class that puts exercise to dance music. During the afternoon, try a game of canasta, or some pool/snooker playing. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. During the evening, starting at 6:00 p.m., musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tappin country music. Come enjoy the music!

Norma Burk and Treca Baer were 2nd. Winner of the pool tournament last week was also a tie between Wayne Vinson and Vic Berryman. Wii bowling champion for the week was Jean Hatcher.

At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. During the evening, starting at 6:00 p.m., musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tappin country music. Duplicate bridge players did meet last week and the announced winners were; Lionel Raff and Al Perry, 1st and Meg Kletke and Adrienne Hyle, 2nd. Winner of the pool tournament last week was Jack Ventris. Wii bowling champion for the week was Lee Arnswald.

New Activities at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will begin two new activities this week. Tuesday, September 9 at 10:30 a.m. you can participate in a fun game called Table Pong. Cups of water are set up and ping pong balls are used by teammates, who race to try to bounce them into their cups first. Sounds like fun? Check it out every Tuesday. Wednesday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m.; a coed pool tournament will be played and you can also get your Medicare medication checked out for any possible savings. Get ready to Zumba with Angie starting Thursday, September 11 at 10:30 a.m. All seniors 50 and over are welcome to participate, free of charge. Angie Whitehead, the certified Zumba instructor would like for you to try this form of an exercise/dance class done to Latin American type dance music; that proves to be a fun way to exercise. This class will be offered Thursdays, September 11th, 18th, and 25th at 10:30 a.m. Then on Friday, September 12 at 12:00 noon the September pot-luck, birthday luncheon will be held.
