Fun things to do at the Senior Center

The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center is a fun place to come and socialize with other seniors, 50 and over, while participating in many different activities. Center hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Stop by 1015 E. 12th or call 747-8080 for more information and make sure to pick up a January calendar of events. Also, starting Wednesday, February 1 through April 17, the AARP tax preparers will be at the Center offering free income tax help. Their hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. It is helpful if you bring in your last year’s tax return. No appointment is needed, it is a first come first served basis.

Monday, January 23 – Women’s pool time and painting class both begin at 9:30 a.m. The women enjoy practicing their pool shots while getting in some good social time with each other. The artists in the painting class enjoy socializing also, while getting creative with their paints and brushes. In the afternoon at 1:00 p.m. games of; rubber bridge, canasta, dominoes, pool, and Mexican train dominoes, are played.

Tuesday, January 24 – Stop putting it off and come get in shape with the free Sit’n Be Fit exercise class that starts at 9:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. It is a good way to get some beneficial stretching and toning. This class is a 45-minute workout where chairs are provided for each person. Some exercises are done while sitting and some are done while standing by your chair. Bouncing balls, hand weights, and stretch bands are incorporated in to the exercises for an extensive workout. Wii games and ping pong are always available for a fun time, too. Afternoon activities include games such as; duplicate bridge, Mexican Train dominoes, canasta, pitch, Skipbo, puzzle solving, snooker, pool and dominoes. A representative from Veteran’s Affairs comes in on Tuesdays, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. to help with any questions or paperwork you may have pertaining to veteran’s assistance.

Wednesday, January 25 – The women get out their pool sticks again at 9:30 a.m. Wii interactive games and ping pong are also available for participation. Afternoon games that usually begin at 1:00 p.m. include; canasta, dominoes, pool, Texas Hold’em, pitch, and puzzle solving. The western movie, “Goodnight for Justice”, will be shown at 2:00 p.m.

Thursday, January 26 – The free Sit’n Be Fit exercise class meets again at 9:30 a.m. Afterwards, Wii Fit is available to use. This is an interactive game system that challenges and can help improve your balance. At 1:00 p.m. you can join in games of canasta, dominoes, social bridge, pitch, pool, snooker, and puzzle solving. A coed in-house pool tournament will be held at 1:00 p.m. Bingo is played at 2:00 p.m. where everyone is a winner. Thursday evenings the Center’s doors reopen at 5:30 p.m. for Music Night. The musicians tune up their instruments and start some good ol’ country tunes at 6:00 p.m.

Friday, January 27 – Activities start at 9:30 a.m. with women’s pool playing and a painting class. There is exercise equipment, Wii games, and a ping pong table all available for use, too. Afternoon participates like to play games that include: canasta, pool, snooker, pitch, Texas Hold’em, dominoes, and a puzzle is out waiting for someone to find the missing pieces.

Last weeks winners of social bridge were: Norma Burk, 1st, and Lew Taylor, 2nd. Texas Hold’em winners were: Shirley Crockett and Allen Shields. A men’s in-house pool tournament was held and Wayne Vinson was the champion.

Closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will be closed on Monday, January 16 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. day. Tuesday, January 17 – The free Sit’n Be Fit exercise class that starts at 9:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday is a good way to get some beneficial stretching and toning. Last weeks winners of rubber bridge were: Louie Geiser, 1st; and Betty Kersten, 2nd. Social bridge winners for the week were: Lew Taylor, 1st, and Larry Simmons, 2nd. Texas Hold’em winners were: Allen Shields and Betty Shields. Duplicate bridge winners were: Betty Abenante and Murna Raff, 1st and Lionel Raff and Seham Sherif, 2nd. Betty Shields won the Texas Hold’em winner’s game for the month.

Celebrate January Birthdays this week!

The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold their January birthday pot-luck luncheon on Friday, January 13 at 12:00 noon. Seniors bring a food dish to share or $3/person and enjoy the fellowship. Many fun activities are offered for seniors 50 and older. Center hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Monday, January 9 – Women pool players and oil painters get together Monday morning at 9:30. The women practice their shots while sharing the laughter with each other. The oil painters share their ideas and techniques with each other, also. In the afternoon, games of rubber bridge, canasta, pitch, dominoes, pool and snooker are played. There is also a puzzle table out waiting for someone to add another piece.

Friday, January 13 – It’s a lucky day at the Senior Center with all the activities happening. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. Preparations will be going on for the January birthday luncheon that begins at 12:00 noon. Also, women will be shooting pool and the artists will be painting on their canvases during the morning. There is exercise equipment, Wii games, and a ping pong table all available for use, too. After the luncheon, people stay to participate in games that include: canasta, pool, snooker, pitch, Texas Hold’em, dominoes, and a puzzle is out waiting for someone to find the missing pieces.

Last weeks winners of rubber bridge were: Janetta Loper, 1st; and Norma Burk, 2nd. Social bridge winners for the week were: Mia Owens, 1st, and Orlean Hunter, 2nd. Texas Hold’em winner were: Betty Shields and Allen Shields. Duplicate winners were: Lionel Raff and Seham Elshert, 1st and Better Abernathy and Murna Raff, 2nd.
