Enjoy the Weather and the Stillwater Senior Activity Center

        Get out and enjoy the spring weather and while you are out come check out the City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center. The Center offers a variety of activities, which include; card games, pool playing, exercise, line dancing, Zumba, painting class, bingo, movies, guitar lessons, and listening to musicians perform. There is also a walking trail in the city park beside the Center so you can get some exercise while enjoying the warmer weather.  The free AARP income tax service continues Monday through Thursday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. No appointments are taken. It is only a first come first serve basis. This free service is provided by AARP trained volunteers and will continue until April 15. You need to bring last year’s income tax return, W-2 forms, identification including Social Security card and photo ID and any other documentation that might be needed to complete your return. Everyone 50 and over should check out their Senior Activity Center. It is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up a March calendar of events.

          Thursday, March 25 at 10:30 a.m. a “One Book One Community” book review will take place at the Senior Activity Center. This is sponsored by the City of Stillwater Public Library. Pat Jaynes will present the community book, “True Grit”, by author Charles Portis. Everyone is welcome to come participate in the review. 

       Also please note; a sign-up sheet is out now at the Center for a defensive driving class that will be provided by Meridian Technology Center, free of charge, on Wednesday, April 15 from 9:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This class may get you a discount on your vehicle insurance. Space is limited so come by or call the Center to get signed up!

        Monday, March 23 – Time is drawing near for the last day to get some free help on your income taxes. The AARP trained tax preparers will be here until Wednesday, April 15. They will be ready to start at 9:30 a.m. Monday morning and go until 12:00 noon. Sign up when you arrive. Other activities starting at 9:30 a.m. are a free exercise class, women’s 8-ball pool time, and a painting/crafting class. The Sit n’ Be Fit exercise class is held every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. This class utilizes stretching bands, bouncing balls and sponge balls as part of the stretching and limbering up routine. Check it out! Women’s pool playing is a good socialization time and competitive fun! The painting/crafting class members test their creative side with their art work. Bring your supplies and give your skills a test. Then at 10:30 a.m. you can get a different kind of exercise by joining the line dancing class and boot scootin’ to country tunes. Afternoon activities include: canasta, bridge, puzzle solving, pool, and snooker.

        Tuesday, March 24 – The doors open at 9:30 a.m. You can get your taxes done then or play Wii games. Wii bowling is the popular game of choice. This is a fun game played on a gaming system. If you like to bowl you should enjoy this game. Then at 10:30 a.m. you can get a really good workout in the free Zumba class. This class is done to some high tempo music and is bound to get your heart rate up. Afternoon games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, and jig-saw puzzle solving. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use in the afternoon, too. Bingo is played at 2:00 p.m.  It is a lot of laughs and everyone gets a prize!

         Wednesday, March 25 – Free tax help continues at 9:30 a.m. Tone up by joining the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class starting at 9:30 a.m. Or bring your pool stick and shoot some 8-ball during women’s pool time, also at 9:30 a.m. Then at 10:30 a.m. line dancers start kicking up their heels to some swinging country tunes. Remember the book review starting at 10:30 a.m. During the afternoon, games of canasta and other card games are played. The afternoon movie is shown at 2:00 p.m. This week’s movie is a rescheduled movie that was cancelled earlier due to the weather. It is a drama titled, “The Theory of Everything”.

         Thursday, March 26 – No appointments needed to get your income taxes figured free! The free service is offered 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Wii bowling games, start at 9:30 a.m. Also, try out your musical skills with free guitar lessons. Then another class that will really burn up the calories is Zumba with Angie. It begins at 10:30 a.m. This is a fast paced exercise class done to jazzy type music. Come check it out and work up a good sweat. Afternoon games start around 1:00 p.m. Canasta is a popular game of choice. At 2:00 p.m. every Thursday a guest bingo caller arrives ready to give out prizes. Join the fun! Don’t forget music night at 6:00 p.m. There is always good toe tapping music to enjoy!

        Friday, March 27 – Exercise again with the Sit ‘n Be Fit class, or play some rounds of women’s pool, or try your hand in the painting/crafting class. All take place at 9:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m. country music can be heard playing as the line dancers move their feet in time to the music. Afternoon games include; canasta and duplicate bridge. At 1:00 p.m. a coed pool tournament will be held. Bring your pool stick and have some fun competition!


         Last weeks reported winners were: for social bridge, Lynn Fent, 1st and Bena Harper, 2nd; in duplicate bridge, Al Perry and Sehem El Sherif, 1st and Betty Lowrey and Patricia Logan, 2nd. Their second day of play, winners were: Meg Kletke and Adrienne Hyle, 1st, and John and Sandy Boepple, 2nd. Wayne Venson was the champion in the coed pool tournament.

The previous week, there were winners for the second day of duplicate bridge, Carolyn Schwabe and Wilma Wehr, 1st and Penny Sizemore and Sehem El Sherif, 2nd. Vic Berryman was the champion in the coed pool tournament.
