Cool seniors at the Senior Center


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center participants are staying cool this summer and enjoying the variety of activities available. These activities are available for seniors, 50 and older. Stop by 1015 E. 12th or call 747-8080 for more information and make sure to pick up an August calendar of events. Hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. If you are interested in joining a bridge group, social or duplicate, at the Center, please call the number given to receive information on how to join or leave your name and phone number.

        Monday, Aug. 12 – Women have a time set aside for pool playing on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings starting at 9:30 a.m. You can bring your own pool stick or use on of the Center’s and join the fun competition. They would like some new players to come join the good times.  If pool playing does not interest you, how about getting creative with the painting group that also meets at the same time on Monday and Fridays. Bring your supplies and join the artists group and share your painting skills with the other members. There is exercise equipment available, also. This includes a treadmill, weight set, and an exercise bike. The afternoon crowd enjoys playing various games of bridge, canasta, dominoes, and pool/snooker. A jigsaw puzzle table is always set up with a puzzle to solve.

        Tuesday, Aug. 13 – Free exercise is available in the class called Sit ‘n Be Fit. This class is offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. The exercises are low impact. Some are done while sitting and others by standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands, and bouncing balls during the 45 minute workout. Afterwards, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing or Wii games. A ping pong table is available for use. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, snooker and jig-saw puzzle solving. A Veteran’s Affairs representative comes in on Tuesdays from 1:00-2:45 p.m. to help with any questions or paper work you may have pertaining to veteran’s assistance. No appointment is needed.

         Wednesday, Aug. 14 – It is women’s pool time again starting at 9:30 a.m.  Also, you could try the Wii interactive games, a game of ping pong, or the exercise equipment.  Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. which include; canasta, dominoes, Texas Hold’em, pitch, pool and snooker. A puzzle is always out waiting for someone to find a piece. The adventure movie, “Skyfall” will be shown at 2:00 p.m.

         Thursday, Aug. 15 – It is time to tone up again with the Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise group that meets for a good workout from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m.  After class, Wii games, ping pong, or line dancing are available. Come check it out. Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. Join us for some wild bingo games at 2:00 p.m. Thursday evening the doors open back up at 5:30 for a night of country music from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

         Friday, Aug. 16 – The women gather again to practice their pool shots and the artists show up to show off their painting skills all beginning at 9:30 a.m. Also, exercise equipment is available for use, along with a ping pong table or a Wii game system.  Afternoon games include: card games, Texas Hold’em, pool, snooker, and dominoes. A coed pool tournament will be held at 1:00 p.m. They need more women to participate. So come on women pool players, join the exciting competition. 

         Champions for various games held last week were: social bridge winners; Norma Burk, 1st; and Marge Reynolds, 2nd. Duplicate bridge winning partners; Lionel Raff and Al Perry, 1st; and Meg Klecke and Lisa Mandini, 2nd. Texas Hold’em champion for the past week was: Lula Mae Davis.
