Senior Center closed for MLK Jr. Day

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will be closed Monday in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. day. Stop by 1015 E. 12th or call 747-8080 for more information on activities offered and make sure to pick up a January calendar of events. Hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Also, if you are interested in joining a bridge group, social or duplicate, at the Center, please call the number given to receive information on how to join. Please take note; it’s that time again, starting in February the trained AARP volunteer income tax preparers will return to the Center to figure income taxes, free of charge. Their first day will be Monday, February 4 and run through April 15th. Their times will be Monday through Thursday mornings, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. No appointments are necessary; it is a first come first serve basis. Bring last year’s return if possible and all other necessary information and identification. Reminder on winter closings; if the Stillwater Public Schools are closed for inclement weather then the Senior Activity Center will also be closed.

       Monday, January 21 – Center is closed.

        Tuesday, January 22 – Tone up with the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class held every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 9:30 to about 10:15 a.m. Some exercises are done while sitting and some are done while standing by your chair. Hand weights, stretch bands, and bouncing balls are all utilized during the 45 minute workout. Afterwards, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing or Wi games. Also, a ping pong table is available for use. In the afternoon, there is a choice of games that include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, puzzle solving, snooker or pool. A Veteran’s Affairs representative comes in on Tuesdays, from 1:00-2:45 p.m. to help with any questions or paper work you may have pertaining to veteran’s assistance. No appointment is needed.

         Wednesday, January 23 – Women pool players start lining up their shots at 9:30 a.m. They have a lively time with lots of laughs. Come join the fun! A Wii interactive game set and a ping pong table are also available for use. Exercise equipment is available, also. Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. which include; canasta, dominoes, Texas Hold’em, pitch, pool and snooker. A puzzle is always out waiting for someone to find a piece. The animated movie, “Ice Age-Continental Drift,” will be shown at 2:00 p.m.

         Thursday, January 24 – Get in shape with the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class starting at 9:30 a.m. After class, you can play some Wii games or ping pong. Also, a group of line dancers sometimes stay and have a good time stepping in time to the music. At 1:00 p.m. afternoon games such as: canasta, dominoes, social bridge, pool, snooker, and puzzle solving, get started. At 2:00 p.m. bingo is called. A lot of laughs are always shared during this time. Don’t miss out on the good times. Thursday evening, the doors open back up at 5:30 p.m. for a night of music. The musicians get set up and tuned up and start some good ol’ country tunes at 6:00 p.m. Come tap your toes with everybody!

         Friday, January 25 – The women pool players are back again along with a painting group that come in at 9:30 a.m. The painters bring their own supplies and share their time and ideas with other artists. Exercise equipment is available for use, along with a ping pong table or Wii player. Check out the afternoon games of cards, pool, snooker, Texas Hold’em, dominoes, and puzzle solving. A coed pool tournament will be held at 1:00 p.m. Men and women come join the friendly competition.

          Last weeks bridge winners were: Norma Burk, 1st; and Mallory Owen, 2nd.  Duplicate bridge winning partners were: Murna Raff and Betty Lowrey, 1st, Penny Sizemore and Lucy Robinson, 2nd. The Texas Hold’em group met and the champion for the week was Allen Shields.
