Senior Center is a cool place to be!


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center is a cool place for seniors 50 and older to come relax and have fun playing games of cards and pool, watching a movie, painting, checking for a bingo win or even exercising. Center hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Stop by 1015 E. 12th or call 747-8080 for more information and make sure to pick up a calendar of events. Also, if you are interested in joining a bridge group, social or duplicate, at the Center, please call the number given to receive information on how to join.

        Monday, July 30 – Women’s pool time, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. is a great time to come learn the game or practice your pool shooting skills. Also, a painting class gets together at the same time. This is a social and creative time to bring your painting supplies, oil or acrylic, and share your skills and ideas with each other. Afternoon activities get going around 1:00 p.m. These include; rubber bridge, canasta, dominoes, pool and snooker.

        Tuesday, July 31 – Every Tuesday and Thursday morning starting at 9:30 a.m., Sit ‘n Be Fit, a free exercise class is offered. Chairs are provided for each person. Some exercises are done while sitting and some are done while standing by your chair. Bouncing balls, hand weights, and stretch bands are incorporated in to the exercises for an extensive workout. After exercise, some of the participants stay and practice line dancing steps for fun. You are welcome to come kick up your heels with them around 10:30 a.m. Wii games and ping pong are always available for a fun time, too. Afternoon activities include games such as; duplicate bridge, Texas Hold’em, Mexican Train dominoes, canasta, pitch, Skipbo, puzzle solving, snooker, pool and dominoes. A representative from Veteran’s Affairs comes in on Tuesdays, from 1:00-2:45 p.m. to help with any questions or paperwork you may have pertaining to veteran’s assistance. No appointment is needed. A senior, men’s pool tournament will begin at 1:00 p.m. Join in!

         Wednesday, Aug. 1 – Pool balls will be rolling again as the women take aim at the cue ball starting at 9:30 a.m. A Wii interactive game set and a ping pong table are also available for use. Exercise equipment which includes a treadmill, exercise bikes, and a weight machine are available, also. Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. include; canasta, dominoes, Texas Hold’em, pitch, pool and snooker. A puzzle is always out waiting for someone to find a piece. The movie, “My Week with Marilyn”, will be shown at 2:00 p.m.

         Thursday, Aug. 2 – A free 45 minute exercise workout with the Sit’n Be Fit class at 9:30 a.m. will give your muscles a good stretching. Afterwards, Wii Fit is available to use. This is an interactive game system that challenges and can help improve your balance. At 1:00 p.m. you can join in games of canasta, dominoes, social bridge, pitch, pool, snooker, and puzzle solving. At 2:00 p.m. bingo is called. Thursday evenings the Center’s doors reopen at 5:30 p.m. for Music Night. The musicians tune up their instruments and start some good ol’ country tunes at 6:00 p.m.

         Friday, Aug. 3 – Join the women’s pool group or check out the painting class at 9:30 a.m. There is exercise equipment, Wii games, and a ping pong table is available for use, too. Afternoon games include: canasta, pool, snooker, pitch, dominoes, and a puzzle with missing pieces.

        Last weeks winners of rubber bridge were:  Penny Sizemore, 1st; and Deloris Sanders, 2nd. Social bridge winners were: Cindy Smith 1st and Linda Jamison, 2nd. Duplicate bridge winning partners were: Camille Johnston and Terry Miller, 1st; and Betty Abenante and Lew Taylor, 2nd. Texas Hold’em winners of the week were:  Shirley Crockett and Betty Shields.
