Stay Cool at the Senior Center


        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center offers a place to get out of the heat and enjoy the many activities offered to seniors, 50 and older, such as; card games, pool/snooker playing, exercise class and exercise equipment, dominoes, bingo, movies, painting class, and musical entertainment. Stop by 1015 E. 12th or call 747-8080 for more information on activities offered and make sure to pick up a June calendar of events. Hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. If you are interested in joining a bridge group, social or duplicate, at the Center, please call the number given to receive information on how to join or leave your name and phone number. Also, take note, a defensive driving class will be offered on July 16, from 9:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check with your vehicle insurance provider to see if the class qualifies you for a discount and sign up now!

        Monday, June 24 – Women’s pool time starts at 9:30 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. The women pool players have some lively rounds of 8-ball.  Also, a painting class gets together to compare each others ideas on their artwork. There is exercise equipment available, also. This includes a treadmill, weight set, and an exercise bike. The afternoon crowd enjoys playing various games of bridge, canasta, dominoes, and pool/snooker. A jigsaw puzzle table is always set up with a puzzle to solve.

        Tuesday, June 25 – Keep cool while getting a workout by joining the free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class offered on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. These exercises are low impact. Some are done while sitting and others by standing next to your chair utilizing hand weights, stretch bands, and bouncing balls during the 45 minute workout. Afterwards, stay and practice some boot scootin’ line dancing or Wii games. A ping pong table is available for use. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, pitch, jig-saw puzzle solving, snooker or pool. A Veteran’s Affairs representative comes in on Tuesdays from 1:00-2:45 p.m. to help with any questions or paper work you may have pertaining to veteran’s assistance. No appointment is needed.

         Wednesday, June 26 – The women circle the pool tables again starting at 9:30 a.m. If pool is not your game, you could try the Wii interactive games, a game of ping pong, or the exercise equipment.  Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. which include; canasta, dominoes, Texas Hold’em, pitch, pool and snooker. A puzzle is always out waiting for someone to find a piece. The dramatic movie, “Won’t Back Down” will be shown at 2:00 p.m.

         Thursday, June 27 – Get off the couch and get some exercise with the Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise group at 9:30 a.m. to about 10:15 a.m. After class, you can play some Wii games or ping pong. A group of line dancers sometimes stay and have a good time stepping in time to the music. Afternoon games such as: canasta, dominoes, social bridge, and puzzle solving, are played at 1:00 p.m. Bingo calling starts at 2:00 p.m. Thursday evening the doors open back up at 5:30 p.m. for a night of music. The musicians get set up and start some good ol’ country tunes at 6:00 p.m. Come tap your toes with everybody!

         Friday, June 28 –Pool balls will be dropping in to the pockets again after the doors open at 9:30 a.m. The painting class group also gets together again at the same time. Exercise equipment is available for use, along with a ping pong table or a Wii game system. Afternoon games include: card games, Texas Hold’em, pool, snooker, and dominoes.

          Last week’s winners of various games were: social bridge; Jean Herndon, 1st; and Sue McMillan, 2nd; duplicate bridge partners; Al Perry and Lionel Raff, 1st; and Meg Kletke and Gay Lynn Bullock, 2nd.  The Texas Hold’em champions for the week were: Chestine Crane and Alan Shields.
