Summer Heat? Beat it here!

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center offers a cool place to beat the heat while enjoying various fun activities. Seniors 50 and older are welcome to come check it out and join in the fun, too. The senior men will participate in a pool tournament on Tuesday, June 19 at 1:00 p.m. An all day defensive driving class will be coming up on July 27. Call or come by for more information or to sign up. Center hours are: Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Stop by 1015 E. 12th or call 747-8080 for more information and make sure to pick up a June calendar of events.

        Monday, June 18 – The Center opens at 9:30 a.m. with morning activities such as women’s pool playing and a painting class. The women bring their pool sticks or use the ones available and have a good competitive time at the pool tables and the painting class members bring their own painting supplies and share their creative ideas. Afternoon activities get going around 1:00 p.m. These include; rubber bridge, canasta, dominoes, pool and snooker.

        Tuesday, June 19 – A free 45-minute exercise class, called Sit ‘n Be Fit is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Chairs are provided for each person. Some exercises are done while sitting and some are done while standing by your chair. Bouncing balls, hand weights, and stretch bands are incorporated in to the exercises for an extensive workout. After exercise, some of the participants stay and practice line dancing steps for fun. You are welcome to come kick up your heels with them around 10:30 a.m. Wii games and ping pong are always available for a fun time, too. Afternoon activities include games such as; duplicate bridge, Mexican Train dominoes, canasta, pitch, Skipbo, puzzle solving, snooker, pool and dominoes. A coed pool tournament will take place at 1:00 p.m. A representative from Veteran’s Affairs comes in on Tuesdays, from 1:00-2:45 p.m. to help with any questions or paperwork you may have pertaining to veteran’s assistance. No appointment is needed.

         Wednesday, June 20 – Women’s pool shooting is a good way to stay cool and have a lot of laughs and fun competition, starting at 9:30 a.m. Wii interactive games and ping pong are also available for participation. Afternoon games that usually begin at 1:00 p.m. include; canasta, dominoes, pool, Texas Hold’em, pitch, and puzzle solving. The movie, “Racing Stripes”, will be shown at 2:00 p.m.  

         Thursday, June 21 – Stretching and toning is emphasized during the Sit’n Be Fit exercise class which gets moving at 9:30 a.m.  It will give you a good 45 minute workout. Afterwards, Wii Fit is available to use. This is an interactive game system that challenges and can help improve your balance. At 1:00 p.m. you can join in games of canasta, dominoes, social bridge, pitch, pool, snooker, and puzzle solving. At 2:00 p.m. bingo is called. Thursday evenings the Center’s doors reopen at 5:30 p.m. for Music Night. The musicians tune up their instruments and start some good ol’ country tunes at 6:00 p.m.

         Friday, June 22 – Pool balls will be rattling around the pool tables starting at 9:30 a.m. as the women take aim with their pool sticks. The painting class also gets together again at the same time.  There is exercise equipment, Wii games, and a ping pong table all available for use, too. Afternoon games include: canasta, pool, snooker, pitch, Texas Hold’em, dominoes, and a puzzle is out waiting for someone to find the missing pieces.

        Last weeks winners of rubber bridge were: Orlean Hunter, 1st ; and Norma Burk, 2nd. Social bridge winners were: Phyllis Mayberry, 1st and Lew Taylor, 2nd. Duplicate bridge winning partners were: Gay Lynn and Martin Bullock, 1st; and Laurie Schlobohm and Ina Lee Abels, 2nd. Texas Hold’em winners of the week were: Betty Shields and Shirley Crockett. Previous week winner of a coed pool tournament held was Ron Thomas. Last weeks winner of another coed pool tournament was Larry Leonard.
