Stillwater Senior Activity Center Can Keep You Busy

The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center offers many activities to keep participants, 50 years old and older, busy. There is no need to sit at home when you can come down to your Center and be around friendly people. You can get busy with activities such as: exercise class, women’s pool time, line dancing, Zumba dancing, card games that include canasta and bridge, pool and snooker, bingo, music night, and a monthly movie. There is no charge for these fun activities just a willingness to have a good friendly time. Hours for participation are Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m.; and music night is held on Thursday evenings, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The facility is closed on weekends. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information and make sure to pick up a calendar of events.

The Walk in the Park event for senior walkers is ongoing in Couch Park. Seniors can sign up and log in each time at the Center. Walk the trail ten times and earn a t-shirt and better health.

Monday, December 14 – A free exercise class is offered at the Center, called “Sit n’ Be Fit”. It is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. The exercise class utilizes stretchy bands to test flexibility and bouncing balls to help with hand/eye coordination, along with stretching and toning exercises. Each person has a chair for some of the exercises and some are done while standing by your chair. Women pool players also come in at 9:30 a.m. and play several friendly rounds of 8-ball. They would welcome some new women players to come join in the fun competition. At 10:30 a.m. line dancers step in time to country songs. You are welcome to come join the group and get some exercise while having fun. During the afternoon, canasta and social bridge players get out their cards for plenty of good times. At 1:00 p.m. a coed pool tournament will take place. Come enjoy the fun competition. A jig-saw puzzle is always out enticing someone to find another piece. Exercise equipment, including a treadmill, is available too.

Tuesday, December 15 – You can also get in shape by joining the “Zumba with Angie” class offered at the Center. This is a fast pace dance exercise class that takes place at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. The exercises are done mostly to Latin American dance music. In the afternoon, games are played that include; canasta, duplicate bridge, pool/snooker, and jig-saw puzzle solving. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use during the afternoon, too. Bingo is played at 2:00 p.m.  It is a lot of laughs and everybody wins a prize!

Wednesday, December 16 – Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class members meet up again at 9:30 a.m.  Women pool players also get out their pool sticks for some good friendly 8-ball. Then at 10:30 a.m., after the exercise class, line dancers start kicking up their heels as they keep up with swinging country tunes. During the afternoon, games of canasta and other card games are played.

Thursday, December 17 – Work up a good sweat by moving to the jazzy tunes in the Zumba class at 10:30 a.m. Then in the afternoon canasta, bridge, other card games, and pool/snooker are played. At 2:00 p.m. it is time to call out “bingo” as the numbers are called out by a guest caller. Everyone is a winner!

Friday, December 18 – Friday mornings are busy starting at 9:30 a.m., with Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class, women’s pool, and a painting class. The painting class is a good social time to bring your art supplies and get creative and discuss your project ideas with the other class members. A popular game in the afternoon, starting around 12:15 p.m., is duplicate bridge. Then canasta players start coming in around 12:30 p.m. They all have a good time and enjoy the fellowshipping. A puzzle is always out waiting for someone to come by and put in a piece or two.

Last weeks reported winners for social bridge were: Bena Harper, 1st, and Connie Mennem, 2nd.  Duplicate bridge winning partners were: Lionel Raff and Al Perry, 1st and Jerry Koelsch and Sandy Boepple, came in 2nd. The second day of duplicate bridge, the winners were: again Lionel Raff and Al Perry, 1st; and Bob Henderson and Betty Lowrey, 2nd. The pool tournament champion for the week was Larry Leonard.
