Stillwater Senior Activity Center Gets Ready for Defensive Driving Class

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will be holding a defensive driving class on Monday, December 7 from 9:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sign up now, class is limited. Meridian Technology Center will be instructing the course. By taking the class, you could possible receive a discount on your vehicle insurance. Check with your insurance provider. The Senior Activity Center offers many activities for participants, 50 years old and older. Hours for participation are Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m.; and music night is held on Thursday evenings, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The facility is closed on weekends. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information and make sure to pick up a calendar of events.

        The Walk in the Park event for senior walkers is ongoing in Couch Park. Seniors can sign up and log in each time at the Center. Walk the trail ten times and earn a t-shirt and better health.

        Monday, November 30 – Join the free exercise class called, “Sit ‘n Be Fit” and work off those extra calories consumed over Thanksgiving.  It is held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. The exercise class utilizes stretchy bands to test flexibility and bouncing balls to help with hand/eye coordination, along with stretching and toning exercises. Each person has a chair for some of the exercises and some are done while standing by your chair. Women pool players also come in at 9:30 a.m. and play several friendly rounds of 8-ball. They would welcome some new women players to come join in the fun competition. At 10:30 a.m. line dancers step in time to country songs. You are welcome to come join the group and get some exercise while having fun. During the afternoon, canasta and social bridge players get out their cards for plenty of good times. A jig-saw puzzle is always out enticing someone to find another piece. Exercise equipment, including a treadmill, is available too.

        Tuesday, December 1 – The “Zumba with Angie” class will work off those extra calories. This is a fast pace dance exercise class that takes place at 10:30 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. The exercises are done mostly to Latin American dance music. In the afternoon, games are played that include; canasta, duplicate bridge, pool/snooker, and jig-saw puzzle solving. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use during the afternoon, too. At 1:00 p.m. a coed pool tournament will take place. Come enjoy the fun competition. Bingo is played at 2:00 p.m.  It is a lot of laughs and everybody wins a prize!

        Wednesday, December 2 – Exercisers meet up again at 9:30 a.m. to tone up in the “Sit ‘n Be Fit” exercise class. Women pool players also get out their pool sticks for some good friendly 8-ball. Then at 10:30 a.m., after the exercise class, line dancers start kicking up their heels as they keep up with swinging country tunes. The Center will start to look like Christmas as participants and the staff members get out the decorations and put up the Christmas tree starting at 10:30 a.m. Volunteers are welcome to come and help. During the afternoon, games of canasta and other card games are played. At 2:00 p.m. the monthly movie, with a Christmas theme, will be shown.

         Thursday, December 3 – It is Zumba time again at 10:30 a.m. Work up a good sweat by moving to the jazzy tunes. Then in the afternoon canasta, bridge, other card games, and pool/snooker are played. At 2:00 p.m. it is time to call out “bingo” as the numbers are called out by a guest caller. Everyone is a winner!

         Friday, December 4 – Friday mornings are busy starting at 9:30 a.m., with Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class, women’s pool, and a painting class. The painting class is a good social time to bring your art supplies and get creative and discuss your project ideas with the other class members. A popular game in the afternoon, starting around 12:15 p.m., is duplicate bridge. Then canasta players start coming in around 12:30 p.m. They all have a good time and enjoy the fellowshipping. Pool tables are also open for some games. A puzzle is always out waiting for someone to come by and put in a piece or two.


         Last weeks reported winners for social bridge were: Anna Cooper, 1st, and Thea Pratt, 2nd; duplicate bridge winning partners were; Al Perry and Lionel Raff, 1st and Betty Lowrey and Patricia Logan, were 2nd. The second day of duplicate bridge, Al Perry and Lionel Raff came in first; and Treca Baer, Norma Burk, Camille Johnston and Betty Lowrey all tied for second place. The winner of the pool tournament this week was Jack Ventris.
