Beat the Summer Heat at the Senior Center

The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center is a good place to stay cool and beat the summer heat. The Center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up a July calendar of events when you stop by. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Music night on Thursdays is a good evening outing to check out.

Monday, July 14 – You can be cool while working out. A free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class is offered every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. A few exercises are done while sitting and some while standing by a chair. It is a good workout that utilizes stretchy bands, bouncing balls, and hand weights. The women pool players are pretty cool, also. They enjoy challenging each other to several rounds of 8-ball. Bring your pool stick or use one from the Center and join the fun. A painting/crafting class also meets. It is a social time to get together and help each other with their artistic ideas. At 10:30 a.m. a group of line dancers practice some boot scoot’in moves. Check it out and get a powerful workout while having a blast! Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. Bridge and canasta are popular card games played along with pool/snooker and puzzle solving.

Tuesday, July 15 – A popular game played on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. is Wii bowling. Each player is in control of his own game by holding the hand controller and trying to make strikes just like at a real bowling alley. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. Water aerobics meets at the Stillwater Municipal pool at 12:30 p.m. It is great exercise, and only $2/session. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, and jig-saw puzzle solving. Bingo players also meet up on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. It is a lot of laughs and everyone gets a prize!

Wednesday, July 16 – The Sit ‘n Be Fit exercisers join up at 9:30 a.m. again, along with the women pool players. Afterwards, stay and practice some line dancing steps at 10:30 a.m. Then, in the afternoon games of canasta, pool and snooker are played along with an afternoon movie, at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is a drama, titled, “Nebraska.”

Thursday, July 17 – The bowling balls come out again on the Wii gaming system at 9:30 a.m. and don’t forget at 12:30 p.m. water aerobics meets up at the City pool. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, social bridge, or participate in the coed 8-ball pool tournament beginning at 1:00 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. Don’t miss out on the fun. During the evening, starting at 6:00 p.m., musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tappin country music.  Come enjoy the music!

Friday, July 18 – Friday mornings are active with exercise class, women’s 8-ball, and a painting/crafting class, all beginning at 9:30 a.m. And at 10:30 a.m. line dancing class members kick up their heels to some music that gets them moving.  After lunch, the cards will be brought out for games of canasta, and pool balls will be dropping in the pockets. Join the fun!
