Stay Cool at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center offers a place to stay cool while enjoying the many activities that are offered to seniors 50 and over. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up an August calendar of events when you stop by. The Center is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Music night on Thursdays is a good evening outing to check out.

        Monday, July 28 – The free Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class takes place every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 9:30 a.m. This is a good workout that utilizes stretchy bands, bouncing balls, and hand weights, while sitting or standing by a chair. Women’s 8-ball pool time also occurs during the same time and days. Bring your pool stick or use one from the Center and join the fun. A painting/crafting class also meets. It is a good social time to get together and help each other with their artistic ideas. At 10:30 a.m. a group of line dancers practice some boot scoot’in moves. Check it out and get a powerful workout while having a blast! Afternoon games begin around 1:00 p.m. Bridge and canasta are popular card games played along with pool/snooker and puzzle solving.

        Tuesday, July 29 – The bowling alley is open every Tuesday and Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Wii bowling, that is. This is a popular game played on a game system where each player is in control of his own game by holding the hand controller and trying to make strikes just like at a real bowling alley. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. Water aerobics will be ending soon at the Stillwater Municipal pool at 12:30 p.m. It is great exercise, and only $2/session. In the afternoon, games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, and jig-saw puzzle solving. Bingo players also meet up on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. It is a lot of laughs and everyone gets a prize!

         Wednesday, July 30 – Morning activities include the Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class at 9:30 a.m., along with women’s pool. Afterwards, stay and practice some line dancing steps at 10:30 a.m. Then, in the afternoon games of canasta are played and a coed 8-ball pool tournament begins at 1:00 p.m. Join the fun! An afternoon movie is shown at 2:00 p.m. The movie for this week is a drama, titled, “Tiger Eyes.”

         Thursday, July 31 – Join the Wii bowling team for fun and laughs starting at 9:30 a.m. And water aerobics meets at the City pool at 12:30 p.m. In the afternoon, get in a game of canasta, social bridge, or pool playing. At 2:00 p.m. a wild game of bingo takes place. Everyone is a winner. During the evening, starting at 6:00 p.m., musicians tune up their instruments to make some good toe-tappin country music. Come enjoy the music!

        Friday, Aug. 1 – Friday mornings are active with exercise class, women’s 8-ball, and a painting/crafting class, all beginning at 9:30 a.m. And at 10:30 a.m. line dancing class members kick up their heels to some music that gets them moving.  After lunch, the cards will be brought out for games of canasta, and pool balls for rounds of pool/snooker.


        Game champions announced for last week were: social bridge winners; Dollie McClary , 1st and Beverly Dale, 2nd. Duplicate bridge winners were; Al Perry and Lionel Raff, 1st and Murna Raff and Sandy Boepple, 2nd place. Winner of the pool tournament last week was Fred Seaman. Wii bowling champion for the week was Lynn Duncan.

Free Blood Pressure Checks at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold free blood pressure checks on Wednesday, July 23 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. These will be provided by May’s Home Call Home Health. Also, on Monday, July 21 at 10:30 a.m., Lois Jackson, a certified massage therapist will be at the Center to provide foot and hand massages. Activities are offered for seniors 50 and over. Defensive Driving Class at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will hold a defensive driving class called, Vehicle Accident Prevention, sponsored by Meridian Technology Center. This class could get you a discount on your vehicle insurance, so check it out with your insurance provider. The class will take place Wednesday, July 9 from 9:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. An hour lunch break will be taken. Call or stop by to sign up now. Also, on Monday, July 7 at 10:30 a.m. Lois Jackson, a certified massage therapist will be at the Center to give hand and foot massages. No appointment is needed. Senior participant’s July birthdays will be celebrated with a “Christmas in July” theme, pot-luck luncheon on Friday, July 11 at 12:00 noon. Bring a food dish to compliment the entrĂ©e of turkey and dressing or pay $3/person. The Center offers many activities for seniors 50 and over.          It is not too late to get in the water aerobics class that meets every Tuesday and Thursday at the City Municipal Pool from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. This class will run through July 31 and only cost $2 each time you attend. Payment is made at the pool. Also, the Walk in the Park program has been popular. You can still participate and work on your health. After ten walks in Couch Park you earn a free t-shirt. So sign up today.
