Senior Center back to regular hours

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity Center will resume regular hours and activities now that the holidays are over. The Center is regularly open Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to 4:30 p.m. and Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for music night. The facility is closed on weekends. Stop by 1015 E. 12th Ave. or call 405-747-8080 for more information. Make sure to pick up a January calendar of events when you stop by. Reminder: Winter is upon us now so if the Stillwater Public schools decide to close due to inclement weather, the Stillwater Senior Activity Center will also be closed.

        Monday, Jan. 5 – If you are worried about all the extra holiday treats that you consumed, maybe it is time for a New Year’s resolution to try an exercise class. The Center offers a free exercise class called, Sit ‘n Be Fit, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. The class gives you a good 45-minute workout. Some exercises are done while sitting and also while standing by a chair. Stretching is done using elastic bands of different strengths. Also, spongy balls, wooden sticks, and weights are incorporated in to the routines. The women pool players also meet at the same time to shoot some games of 8-ball pool. Or, you could try your hand at painting or crafting in the art class at 9:30 a.m. Bring your art supplies and show off your talents. Then afterwards the line dancers will work off some of their extra calories with their fancy footwork. Beginners to more advance dancers are all welcome. They have a good and invigorating time. Later, during the afternoon games of bridge, canasta, pool/snooker, and jig saw puzzle solving are popular.

        Tuesday, Jan. 6 – Try out your hand at Wii bowling. It is a fun and popular activity to participate in on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. Then at 10:30 a.m. you can get some energetic exercise in the free Zumba class. Afternoon games include; canasta, duplicate bridge, dominoes, and jig-saw puzzle solving. Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. At 1:00 p.m. a coed 8-ball pool tournament will be held. Women are encouraged to participate. Don’t let the men have all the fun!  Bingo is played at 2:00 p.m. It is a lot of laughs and everyone gets a prize!

         Wednesday, Jan. 7 – It is time to exercise again with the Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise group which meets starting at 9:30 a.m. Or bring your pool stick and shoot some 8-ball during women’s pool time, also at 9:30 a.m. Then at 10:30 a.m. line dancers start kicking up their heels to some swinging country tunes.  During the afternoon, games of canasta and other card games are played, and also pool and snooker. An afternoon movie is shown at 2:00 p.m. This week’s movie is a comedy, drama titled, “100 Foot Journey”.

         Thursday, Jan. 8 – Thursday morning starts off with Wii bowling and guitar lessons at 9:30 a.m. Then another class that will really burn up the calories is Zumba with Angie. It begins at 10:30 a.m.  This is a fast paced exercise class done to jazzy type music. Come check it out and work up a good sweat. Afternoon games start around 1:00 p.m.  Canasta is a popular game of choice along with pool and snooker. At 2:00 p.m. every Thursday a guest bingo caller arrives ready to give out prizes. Join the fun!

         Friday, Jan. 9 – This will be a busy morning at the Senior Center. It starts off at 9:30 a.m. with the Sit ‘n Be Fit exercise class, women’s pool, and the painting/crafting class. At 10:30 a.m. country music can be heard playing as the line dancers do some boot scootin’moves across the floor. Also, preparations will be going on for the 12:00 noon, January, pot-luck luncheon. Ham and beans and cornbread will be the entrée this month, so bring a food dish to share or pay $3/person and enjoy good food and friends. After lunch, stay and get in a game of canasta or pool.


         Game champions announced for last week were: for social bridge; Lynn Fent, 1st and Jean Herndon, 2nd. Duplicate bridge did not meet due to the holiday.

Happy New Year from the Senior Center

Christmas Brunch at the Senior Center

        The City of Stillwater Senior Activity will celebrate the holiday with a Christmas brunch on Monday, December 15 at 10:30 a.m. Senior participants are invited to bring a food dish or snack item to share and enjoy the fellowship with everyone. The Center offers a fun place for persons 50 years old and over to come and enjoy various activities at no cost. Get active and stay active! Exercise equipment that includes a treadmill, two exercise bikes, and a weight set are available for use, too. Bingo is played at 2:00 p.m. It is a lot of laughs and everyone gets a prize!

An afternoon movie is shown at 2:00 p.m. A holiday themed movie will be shown this week titled, “The Christmas Shoes.”

This is an aerobic dance workout done to mostly American Latin type music. This exercise will surely eat up the calories and there is no charge for the class. In the afternoon, canasta, bridge, other card games, and pool and snooker are played. At 1:00 p.m. a coed 8-ball pool tournament will be held. Women are encouraged to participate. Don’t let the men have all the fun! At 2:00 p.m. bingo is played with a guest caller and everyone is a winner.
    
     Friday, Dec. 19 – Friday mornings get busy with exercise class, women’s pool, and a painting/crafting class at 9:30 a.m. Line dancing starts at 10:30 a.m. This is a good workout that is fun while testing your coordination. Then stay for the afternoon and play canasta, other card games, or pool and snooker. A jig saw puzzle is always out for some challenging puzzle solving.

Stretching bands, rubber bouncing balls, sponge balls, and wooden dowel sticks are all used for various exercises that help with your coordination and flexibility. Or, if exercise is not for you, there is women’s pool playing time and a painting/crafting class that meets at the same time of morning. The women pool players play several rounds of 8-ball while enjoying the social time with each other. The painting/crafting class gets together to share their creative ideas. You can bring your art supplies or a craft project and join the good time. Also, at 10:30 a.m. seniors can come try their footwork out to some country music during the line dancing class.        Thursday, Dec. 4 – The Wii gaming system is brought out for some wild games of bowling starting at 9:30 a.m. Guitars are also out during that time for some free guitar lessons. Bring your guitar and check out the class. Then at 10:30 a.m. you can Zumba with Angie. This is an aerobic workout while moving to mostly American Latin type music. This exercise will surely eat up the calories and there is no charge for the class. In the afternoon, canasta, bridge, other card games, and pool and snooker are played. At 2:00 p.m. bingo is played with a guest caller and everyone is a winner.

Also, at 2:00 p.m. participants can say goodbye and wish well wishes to the Center’s intern, Andrea Nealy. She is graduating from Oklahoma State University this month and Friday will be her last day at the Center.
